I DON’T think Jean Frost (Letters, May 3) saw the same Brideshead Revisited production as I did recently at the Theatre Royal, but I know that Charles Hutchinson did.
I have seen many excellent English Touring Theatre co-productions over the years, but this was one of the worst.
I know it is common practice for some actors to take on more than one role, but in this case there were so many that it was confusing.
The first half seemed to be being played as a comedy and I don’t see it that way.
I thought that the casting of a woman to play both Bridie and Rex Mottram was a mistake. They both came over as caricatures more suited to a Berwick Kaler production.
A production has to be believable and there was some further questionable casting for some of the major female roles.
Above all, advice should have been sought from the Catholic church on how to pronounce St Francis Xavier (it isn’t Ex-avier) and on how to dress a Monsignor (not with the pink silk sash of a bishop).
We stuck it out for the second half, which was marginally better, but the two couples in front of us voted with their feet.
