AN ENTERPRISING York student believes his new finance app will find a gap in the market.

Harry Lee, a first-year computer science student at York St John University, has teamed up with two friends to form the company Dotcom Technologies Ltd.

The firm will begin development on its free student finance app in early 2017 and is providing website design services to fund the project.

Mr Lee is working alongside Liam Hicks, a student at Leeds Beckett University and Corey Potts, who is due to start at Newcastle University in September.

"We are really, really passionate about technology," said Mr Lee.

"When I first came to university, I was looking for an app similar to what we had in mind.

"There were finance apps, but they weren't really tailored to students.

"They were asking for things like your income, which is not really relevant to students.

"I definitely think there's a gap in the market for it."

With students' finances increasingly stretched, Mr Lee says the app will help many save money and make the most of the deals that are out there.

And he is confident of securing advertising revenue.

Mr Lee said: "It's an app purely for students. It will help students plan their budget for each year.

"The app will link in with Student Finance, so it knows what sort of loan the student has.

"It will use GPS and get data from supermarkets to target the best deals.

"It will also get data from pubs and clubs about promotions they are running.

"You will get alerts saying things like you can't go out tonight if you want to stick to your budget."

Mr Lee added that the app will be free and make money from advertising by companies such as banks.
