“MAKE the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it.”

This is the gist of Hitler and Goebbels’ propaganda analysis. Does this apply to us today?

How enormous and simple were the lies peddled about the Liverpool fans and victims? How many times were they repeated over nearly three decades, including over the past two years of Hillsborough inquests?

The mechanics of establishment cover-ups are being debated in the media, on the crest of a wave of truth over Hillsborough.

For all those who have wept, like me, to hear the pain and joy of the families and campaigners, I ask what can be done to eliminate these cover-ups, so that real justice prevails?

Having campaigned for many years to re-open the inquest into the death of Dr Kelly, I see one simple way in which we can help those crying out for truth and justice. Watch out for the big lie.

Keep an open rational mind to great untruths. Anything is possible after Hillsborough. We know that Liverpool fans did not urinate on police.

The depraved imagination which conjured that big lie instead planted a sordid image in our consciousness, and projected evil onto innocents.

We can protect ourselves, victims and society from the big lie. Easy. Question it. Don’t believe it.
