Music nights - There will be live music with Malarkey for St Patrick's Day in the Half Moon Inn, Acklam, tomorrow (Thursday). On Saturday there will be a Motown and 1960s night. Amotherby

Parish hall - The annual general meeting of the parish hall will take place on Wednesday, March 23, at 7.30pm, in the hall committee room. The parish hall was built to serve the four villages of Appleton, Amotherby, Swinton and Broughton and all but Amotherby are very under represented on the management committee. If you would be interested in supporting the hall or joining, please go along. A car boot and table top sale will be held at the parish hall on Easter Monday, from 9am to 1pm. Appleton-le-Moors

History Group - The latest Tea and Chat of 2016 season was held in the Village Hall. A good turn-out of more than 20 people was much appreciated. As usual a thank to Shirley Brooke for the catering and a special thanks to Hester Richardson for bring a number of fascinating photographs. The next event is a formal talk The History of Woodland Management at Appleton Mill by Jonathan Allison at 7.30pm Tuesday, March 29. Admission £2.50. The final tea and chat for this season will be at 2pm on Monday, April 4. The street lighting contract has been agreed. Unfortunately the repair to the on light which was off has resulted in it now being on permanently. A cheque was signed to cover the cost of the new "speed limit" illuminating sign. The new village website will be going live shortly.

Brompton-by-Sawdon

Brompton Swings - The evening was organised by Brampton’s MET Group, together with Scarborough Musical Academy based in Wykeham. On entering Brompton Village Hall on Saturday, you could have been for forgiven for thinking that you had entered into a West End theatre. A huge curved burgundy coloured curtain formed a stunning backdrop and the stage was set for some fine singing. The evening was a sell-out and once the audience was seated, the show opened with Tuesday Singers, a new group of 25 people singing in close harmony under the direction of Sue Hartley, principal of Scarborough Music Academy. They wowed the packed audience with their exuberant rendition of Unchained Melody. This was followed by soloists Josh, Henry, and Lana who gave stunning performances from the shows. Then the mood changed as Dave Pinkney took to the stage and transported everyone back to the 1960s and 1970s with Buddy Holly and Chris Rea classics which set many a foot tapping. Finally, the Tuesday Singers returned to the stage and closed a spectacular show with a Beatles medley featuring 15 of their hit songs. Sue Hartley’s accompaniment on keyboard throughout the evening was breath taking. To finish off a fine musical evening, supper was served and conversation flowed well into the night.

French Bistro Evening - On Saturday, march 5, the Forge tea rooms played host to a French Bistro evening in aid of Action Medical Research for Children which currently funds more than 75 projects at leading hospitals, universities and specialist centres across the UK. Guests were served a sumptuous five-course meal, all the proceeds of which went to the charity. The event was organised by Kirsty Mills and other volunteers and raised the fantastic total of £2,107 for the charity. This group will soon be adding to the total raised as they are due to take part in a sponsored cycling event from London to Paris in July.

Gardening club - A grand plant sale and coffee morning will be held on Easter Monday, March 28, from 10am to 11.30am. Entry fee will be £1.50 to include coffee and biscuits. On sale will be a selection of plants, shrubs, produce, cakes and garden sundries. Anyone having plants to offer for sale should contact a committee member or bring them to the hall on the morning of the sale as soon as possible after 9am.

Domino drive - The last domino drive of this winter season will be held in Brompton Village Hall on Thursday, March 24, at 7.30pm. Entry is £1.50 to include supper. If anyone has any prizes which they would like to donate, please contact Elaine or David Mudd.

All Saints Church - There will be no service at Brompton on Sunday in order for the Benefice to join together at Snainton on Palm Sunday. All are welcome to meet outside Snainton Village Hall, at 10am, for the Palm Procession to St Stephen’s Church where the Communion Service starts at 10.30am. On March 27, Brompton will host the All Age celebration of Easter starting with Easter egg rolling on Castle Hill (opposite the primary school) at 10.30am. Please bring your own decorated hard boiled eggs. The service starts at 11am. Helen Wright will introduce a new tune to ring on handbells.

Bulmer

Bridge club - The results of the meeting of Bulmer Bridge Club on Thursday, March 10 were: 1st: Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske, 66.7 per cent; 2nd: Angela and Ian Barnett, 58.1 per cent.

Harome

Prize bingo -Harome Bowling Club will hold a prize bingo in Nawton Village Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. Good prizes. All welcome. In aid of bowling club funds.

Malton

Bridge club - There was a big win for Anne Avery and Graeme Matthew, with a score of 50 points, in the third session of Malton Bridge Club’s Cross-IMP pairs competition. In second place were John and Beryl Bramall with 20 points, while Mike and Annette Jackson were third with eight points.

Middleton

Lacemaking - On Saturday there will be a meeting of the Pickering Lacemakers in Middleton Village Hall, from 10am to 3pm.

Nawton

Spring quiz - Friends of Nawton Primary School have a quiz sheet with some 50 questions. They are available in the local shops or phone 07799 667672. Entries to be returned to school by May 7 and the winners will be announce at the school's spring fair on Saturday, May 21.

Prize bingo - Harome Bowling Club will hold a prize bingo in Nawton Village Hall on Saturday at 7.30pm. Good prizes. All welcome. In aid of bowling club funds.

Newton-upon-Rawcliffe

Craft club - There will be a meeting of the craft club at the Newton-upon-Rawcliffe Village Hall tomorrow (Thursday) from 7pm to 9pm. All welcome. Admission is £2, which includes tea and/or coffee and biscuits.

Social evening - On Thursday, March 24, at 7.30pm, in the Newton-upon-Rawcliffe Vilage Hall, there will be a social evening entitled, Adventures in America and New Zealand' with Dennis and Vivian Wilcox. Admission will be £3, which will include tea or coffee and biscuits. There will also be a raffle.

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the Newton-upon-Rawcliffe Village Hall on Thursday April 14, at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50 which will include tea or coffee and biscuits. There will also be a raffle.

Kirkbymoorside

Rehearsal orchestra - The Friday Rehearsal Orchestra is 25 years old this year. During this time many players have experienced an enormous range of orchestral music without the stress of giving concerts. Many of them are relative beginners, others are seasoned players extending their orchestral repertoire. Expertise is shared in a relaxed and friendly but purposeful atmosphere. On Friday, March 18, the orchestra will welcome members of the public to attend the final rehearsal of the term. There is a party afterwards to which all are welcome. This is also the last term that the conductor Tim Brooks will be in charge, and the orchestra is hoping to give him a memorable evening. Please come and join in.

Daffodil walk - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie daffodil sponsored walk takes place on Saturday, April 16. Sponsorship forms are now available from June Cook on 01751 431160. There are two walks. 10am start.

Tennis club - Kirkbymoorside Tennis Club is running junior coaching sessions for under 12s in the Easter holidays at the Kirkbymoorside courts, from 1pm to 2pm, on Tuesday, March 29 and Thursday, March 31, then Tuesday, April 5 and Thursday, April 7. Marie Curie - The street collection and a coffee morning at Kirkbymoorside on Wednesday, March 2, raised £896.67 for Marie Curie care. Thanks to all who supported or helped in any way to make this event a success.

Bridge club - For the second successive game there was a tie at North/South, again involving Clarissa Napier and Chris Brett. This week they shared the honours with Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with a score of 58.5 per cent. At East/West it was a clear win for first time partnership of Judith O'Donnell and George Goodall with a fine score of 69.6 per cent. Sue Pearson and Steve Lonsdale were runners up on 61.1 per cent. A well bid no trump small slam earning play of the week for Ann Scott and Frank Bailey.

Ladies fellowship - There was a change to the regular meeting in March. Members got together one afternoon to help with the annual spring-cleaning at All Saints Church. Two hours and a lot of elbow grease resulted in a beautifully clean and polished church. Thank you so much ladies. It really is appreciated. The next meeting is on Wednesday, April 13, at 7.30pm, in the Library. Jim Pewtress will be talking about the birdlife in Ryedale. New members welcome.

Manor Close - A domino drive will be held at the centre on Wednesday, March 23, at 7.30pm.

Tuesday Group - Members meet on Tuesday, March 22, in the Methodist Church Jubilee Room, at 7.30pm. Guest speaker will be Rev Tanya Brosnan. The leader is Anne and the tea hostesses will be Jean and Margaret. The district spring day is on Thursday, April 21, at Lidgett Grove, York.

Camera Club - The next meeting takes place at the Moorside Club tomorrow (Thursday) when John Devlin will give an illustrated talk entitled Beyond the Wall.

Coffee morning - The Kirkbymoorside In Bloom Group would welcome support for its coffee morning in Church House on Wednesday, March 23, from 9.30am to noon. Tea/coffee and hot cross bun £1.50. There will also be a raffle.

Moorside bar and club - Friday is bingo night, at 8.30pm. On Saturday, entertainment is with Nigel Heap, at 8.30pm. On Friday, March 25, it is bingo again at 8.30pm. On Saturday, March 26, the entertainment is with Dave Lesley, starting at 8.30pm.

Domino drive - The Kirkbymoorside bowling club's monthly meeting is on Saturday in the club house, at 7.30pm.

Messy church - The group meets at the Methodist church on Monday, March 21, from 3.45pm to 6pm. Adults and accompanied children are invited.

All Saints Church - Pilgrim discipleship group meets in church today (Wedesday) at 7.30pm. Members of the junior church gave flower posies to all female members of the congreation on Mothering Sunday. On Good Friday there is a family service at 9.30am and on the Saturday before Easter day, member will make the Easter garden in church. On Easter day, after the service, members will have an Easter egg hunt in the Millennium garden. Members wish Rebecca Stamp a happy birthday.

Environment group - The next Give or Take Days will be on Sunday, April 10, from 9am to noon, in the Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall. Goods may be delivered the day before, from 6pm to 8pm, and on Sunday, from 8am onwards. Bring your unwanted items for other people to find, and come and find some useful items for yourself with no money involved.

Refreshments will be available, and the funds from these will be shared between Kirkbymoorside in Bloom and the Cycle Track Fund.

Coffee morning - There will be a coffee morning with stalls for Shoebox Appeal on Wednesday, April 6, from 9.30am to 11.30am at the Methodist church Schoolroom.

Osgodby

Bingo - A bingo evening was held at the community centre with Les Craggs as caller, Moira Audsley and Janet McNamara as cashiers and Margaret Rogers and Christine Hastie as checkers. Refreshments were served by Anita Wilkinson and Mrs Rogers. A raffle was run by Mrs McNamara. The flyer was run by Joan Davies. All welcome to attend on Mondays at 7.15pm.

Ladies Club - Thirty-two members were welcomed to this month’s meeting by chairman Moira Audsley. In an absorbing talk the speaker, genealogist Anne Batty, of Scarborough, said that after a life-long interest in her own family history, she now operates professionally as Family Discovery Research Services and she related some of her experiences in tracing the ancestral roots of clients from all over the country. The hostesses were Lynn King and Pat Clough and the treasurer was Gill Sowman. A raffle was run by Mary Weller, Lesley Metcalfe, Karan Rogers and Judith Lawrence.

Fitness groups - Both men and women from all areas are invited to join these groups at the community centre. Angie Wood leads members in T’ai Chi movements and breathing exercises on Mondays at 11am. New members will be welcomed. The Pilates group meets on Tuesday at 10.45am under the direction of Vicki Boyer. The yoga class is held on Thursdays, from 1.30pm to 2.30pm. Each session costs £4 and as it includes a relaxation period, please wear loose clothing, and bring if possible a mat, a small cushion and a warm fleece or wrap. The keep-fit group meets at the community centre under the leadership of Brenda Martin for aerobics, salsa and body toning on Friday at 7pm. New members welcomed. Phone Brenda on 01723 583166.

Ukulele club - Members met at the community centre at 11am on Saturday and practised tunes and chords under the leadership of Bill Hyndford. People from all areas are welcome to join the group and there are spare ukuleles to borrow for the session. Anyone who is interested in joining a group to play or learn the acoustic guitar is asked to contact Mr Hyndford.

Handicrafts - Members of the craft group met at the community centre on Thursday under the leadership of Maureen Picken to discuss their handicraft progress with each other. Current work includes crocheting and knitting squares, toys and garments, sewing, embroidery, jewellery and quilting.

Pickering

Yorkshire dialect evening - On Friday, April 1, at 7.30pm, at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, Pickering, there will be an evening entitled, Yorkshire Dialect evening with Adam Collier, plus a pie and pea supper with the pies supplied by Auntie Annn’s Bakery of Helmsley. There will also be a raffle. The evening is in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Craft and gift fair - The return of the Pickering Craft and Gift fair with collectables and Fleamarket returns to the Pickering Liberal Club in Smiddy Hill over the Easter weekend. It will be open for four days from Saturday, March 26 to Tuesday, March 29, from 10am to 4pm. Last year the fair supported the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and raised £ 310. It will supprt the YAA again this year.

Art exhibition - There will be an art exhibition presented by North Yorkshire Artists at Pickering Memorial Hall from Friday, March 25, to Monday, March 28. The exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 5pm. Free entry, but the exhibition is supporting St Catherine’s Hospice.

Cake stall - The friends of Kirk Theatre, Pickering will be holding a cake stall in the Market Place on Saturday,April 2, to raise funds.

Probus club - Members of the Vale of Pickering Probus Club and their guests enjoyed the anniversary lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel, Pickering, on Tuesday March 8. Hardy plant group - The March meeting of the hardy plant group of the Pickering Horticultural Society will be held tomorrow (Thursday) in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, Pickering, at 7.30pm, when there will be a talk and presentation by Michael Myers, of Harrogate, whose subject will be, Scents and Scentsability – Unusual Scents in the Garden. This is an excellent opportunity to learn to meditate to overcome stress and worry, find inner peace, and experience better health and more happiness in your life. The meditation classes offer practical solutions to everyday problems and are suitable for everyone. Classes consist of two meditations and a teaching on different themes throughout the year. Weekly draw - The £975 main prize in last week's Pickering Town FC Super Draw was not won with the winning numbers 36, 22, and 3 so this week's draw will be increased to £1,050. The March consolation prize draw was also held last week and there was no winner with the winning numbers 22 and 36 so the draw for £ 50 will be doubled for the April consolation prize draw to £100.

Ryedale Aquarist Society - Members met in the Mill Suite at Pickering Memorial Hall last week when David Marshall presented a talk entitled, A magnificent seven Labyrinth Fish. The next meeting of the society will be held in the Mill Suite at the Pickering Memorial Hall on Wednesday, April 6, when a 'How to prepare fish for the showing bench workshop' will take place at 7.30pm. The society will once again hold their annual open show on Sunday, June 12, at Kirby Misperton Village Hall.

Slimming World - Pickering now holds three weekly Slimming World classes, on Tuesdays in the Memorial Hall, Potter Hill, Pickering, at 5pm and/or 7pm, on Wednesdays in the Library on the Ropery also at 5pm and/or 7pm, and on Saturday at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane, Pickering, at 9am.

Rillington

Show - At a committee meeting of Rillington and District Horticultural and Industrial Society held in the Coach and Horses, the schedule for the 93rd annual show was discussed. The photography classes are: Sunset and My Pet. There will also be an open class and class for a photograph with an amusing caption. For the second year a competition to grow the tallest sunflower is open to under 12 year olds. Entrants to provide their own sunflower seed. Whoever has the tallest sunflower on the day wins. Previously exhibitors had to reside in Rillington or the surrounding villages to enter the show. A rule change now permits non-residents of the Rillington area to exhibit at the show providing they are members of the Society. So why not become a member of the society. Membership is only £2 per person and is payable on completion of the show entry form.

Quiz - Ten teams playing for £82 in prize money took part Mike Williams' general knowledge quiz in the Fleece Inn. After a tie break with Team @ the Bar, the winners on 66 points were Sue's Crew, second were Team @ the Bar (66 points) and third after a tie-break with Gary's Team were 30/32's (61 points). The £20 jackpot question was won by 30/32s.

Mike's next quiz at the Fleece will be on Friday, March 25.

Music - Folk rock band The Beggar's Bunce, from York, are appearing live at the Fleece Inn on Saturday, from 9.30pm.

Bingo - Prize bingo will be held in Woodlands Community Centre for centre funds on Wednesday, March 23. Doors open 6.45pm, eyes down 7.15pm.

Ryedale

AGM - Cyril Shreeve was re-elected as president and chairman of the Ryedale branch of the RAF Association at the annual general meeting at Eden Camp on March 1. Mr Shreeve, a former mayor and clerk of Norton Town Council, served in the RAF from 1941 to 1946. He has been chairman of the Ryedale branch, which now has 106 members, for 17 years. Mr Shreeve said that he was proud to serve such a vibrant and loyal branch and looked forward to another year of fellowship and fundraising alongside the committee. The Ryedale branch holds regular meetings at Malton and Norton Golf Club with lunches and other social events held both at the club and other venues in the area. Ryedale Parkinson's Support Group - The February and March meetings held in Trinity Methodist Church, Norton, were "chair exercises with Chris Bellis and "dominoes for all". St Martin’s Church - The Vicar, the Reverend Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the service of Holy Communion. Kate Middleton led the prayers and Kieron Middleton assisted at the distribution of communion. Edna Burton accompanied the hymns on the piano, and Dot Francis read one of the bible readings. Julie Stephenson and Janet Lamb were sidespersons, and Lucy Haycock and Lindsay Smithson served refreshments. Steve Raettig led the 11am all-age service and gave the talk. Bec Cremer read and Liz Cremer led the prayers. Steve also led the sung worship with Richard Fuller and Chloe Proctor (guitars), and John Taylor and Esme Raettig took turns on the drums. Wendy Haslam served refreshments after the service.

Sherburn

Letter’s Draw - The letters drawn on March 12 were D M V. As there was no winner next week’s prize fund will be £240.

East Riding - Quiz night at the East will be on Thursday, March 24, at 8.30pm. The Open the Box game stands at £30 so come along and have a go at both. On Saturday, March 26, there will be live music with Chumashu from 9pm. All are welcome to come along to these events.

Community Club - Join the club on Saturday, from 8.30pm, for an evening of live music from The Wave. Late bar. Everyone welcome. St Hilda’s Church – The Morning Worship was led by Barbara Grice, who took “Hope” as the theme for the service. Tony Mok played the music on his guitar, and the lesson was read by Keith Usher, who also acted as sidesperson together with Jean Usher. Coffee at the end of the service was served by Lydia Mok and helpers. The next service at St Hilda’s will be “Reflection” on Good Friday at 2pm. On Easter Sunday, there will be a United Benefice service at St Andrew’s Church at Rillington at 10am. The Easter Service for the school will be on Thursday, March 24, beginning at the Methodist Church at 9.30am. and then on to St Hilda’s Church.

Methodist news - Donations for coffee at the Tuesday Coffee Morning continue to be given for Sherburn C of E School for RE resources. The Holy Communion Service on Sunday was led by Reverend Dr Bob Whitfield, assisted by his wife Brenda who read the gospel lesson. Members were welcomed by Christine Pickard and Ray Pickard was the Offertory steward. Organist was Chris Cade assisted by Joe Cade on the drums. Communion Steward was Jean Brown and the audio visual was by Christine Fenwick. The service next Sunday at 10.30am will be led by Bruce Clark and all are invited to come along.

Sinnington

People's Guild - An attentive and responsive congregation thoroughly enjoyed the talk and film presentation entitled "Black cats and cracked mirrors" given by Christine Pietrowski on Tuesday, March 8. Not confessing to be superstitious, the guild nevertheless knew most of the superstitions and were very interested in the saying's origins. Members were all given a "lucky four leafed clover" charm and the draw for the lucky birthday was won by Elspeth Clark. Olive Leng was the pianist and tea with biscuits was served. There is no meeting in Holy week so the next and last meeting will be a musical evening given by Singing for Pleasure on Tuesday, March 29, at 7.15pm. Supper will be served and the collection will be for Guild funds. All welcome.

Slingsby

Ladies Group - This month's meeting took place on March 8 and Beryl Queen welcomed 18 members. After the minutes were read and signed and announcements of invitations to other groups given out Beryl introduced Keith Jones, the speaker for the evening. Keith had been a contestant in the television game show The Cube. It was very interesting to hear how the programme is produced. The group next meets on Tuesday, April 12, at 7.15pm, in the Methodist Schoolroom, when new ladies are welcome to hear a talk by the National Trust about Goddards.

Thornton-le-Clay

Quiz night - There will be a charity quiz night at the White Swan Inn, Thornton-le-Clay, on Tuesday, March 22,at 7pm, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Research. It is being hosted on behalf of Ruth Carr, a local horse trainer, from Stillington, she has been selected to ride in the Macmillian Charity Race in York on June 11. Ruth has pledged to raise £10,000 for the cause and needs your support. Tickets cost £10 per person, which also includes a hot supper. The winning team will receive a case of wine. Thornton-le-Dale

Bridge club - The result of the competition held on Monday, March 7. North South winners were Barry Smith and Bob Wardell with 66.7 per cent and in second place George and Pat Donnor with 53.5 per cent. East West winners were Bob and Gladys Thompson with 70.0 per cent and in second place Ralph and Hilary Hurst with 55 per cent.

Westow

Spring fair -On Saturday, April 2, there is to be a Spring Fair in Westow Village Hall, from 10.30am to 1pm. Stalls so far booked include fresh bread, pork pies, sausage rolls, pasties and puddings. The cricket club will be having stalls selling cakes and home baking, second hand books and a tombola, as well as serving tea/coffee and juice. Blue bag collection - On Saturday, April 16, there will be a blue bag collection around Westow. Blue bags will be distributed shortly around Westow for the donations of unwanted clothes, shoes, belts, hats, bags and soft toys. Anyone not from Westow can be involved and need to leave their donated items in front of Westow Village Hall before 10.30am or phone Julie on 01653 618214 to arrange a different time /date. Black bags and/or carrier bags can also be used. Items donated will be sold by weight and the money given to the cricket club for club funds.

Wombleton

Prize bingo - There will be a bingo evening today (Wendesday) in the village hall , at 7.30pm, and a quiz evening on Friday, April 15. Both are raising funds for the village hall.
