A MOTHER and daughter who are still helping flood victims more than two months after York's River Foss burst its banks have been nominated for the York & District Medal.

Michaela Robinson, 46, from Tang Hall, and her daughter Jade, 23, from Clifton, began serving hot food and drinks to people who had been flooded out of their homes in the Huntington Road area late in December.

They took over a facility which had originally been set up by scouts from Copmanthorpe, and gradually expanded the service.

Michaela said they had been leant a food wagon by Lynne Balding - a York resident whose daughter Nicola was a flood victim - a portable building by the York-based manufacturer Portakabin, a generator by roofer Bill Finch and gas bottles by Calor Gas, while Warburtons had been giving them an unlimited supply of bread buns.

She said they were visited regularly by flood victims, some of whom had carried on living in the upstairs of their homes while others had been paying regular return visits as repairs got underway, and it had become a hub for the local community where residents could meet up and chat.

"We have cried with people and hugged them and laughed with them," she said.

The pair, who only took one day off for the funeral when Michaela's mother died suddenly in January, have now been affectionately dubbed 'Fossy's Flossys.'

Heidi Sellers, of Huntington, who nominated them for the medal, said she felt they deserved it 'for their tireless hard work and support for the community of York during and after the floods.'

She said: "They are still serving food and drink as well as using the hub as a point of contact, support and information for households that were flooded. These ladies very much deserve to be awarded."

The Press has teamed up with City of York Council to honour the heroes of the post-Christmas floods through the medal, with support from York-based mutual healthcare provider, Benenden.

Fifty commemorative medallions will be presented by the Lord Mayor of York at a special, investiture-style reception at one of York’s most historic buildings, such as The Guildhall.
