Here are 55 photos of Walmgate and its bar from 1900 through to 1990, including this stunning shot from 1959.
The caption for that one reads: "No, it's not a flame thrower. The streaks of light are caused by vehicle lights moving across the field of view of a Yorkshire Evening Press photographer's camera while the shutter was open for a one minute exposure. Walmgate Bar itself - not at the moment floodlit - has a floodlit effect, given by street lamps and vehicle lights."
