REPAIR workers at a flood-hit security company in York have discovered a 30-foot well.

Eboracum Security's offices in Franklin's Yard off Fossgate, was badly damaged during the recent flooding, and work has begun to repair the floor and walls in the building.

Staff visited the office today to find a 30-foot drop directly underneath where one of the worker's desks had been.

Paul Kennedy, operations manager, said: "We came in today to see how the building work was going on and the builders had seen a circular crack in the concrete floor and chiselled away and found this well underneath that goes down about 30 feet.

"It's just where my seat and desk were, so it was right under me the whole time. Thinking back, it's a bit worrying but it's all safe. It just goes to show you never know what's underneath you in York."

A photograph of the well was shared online by Paul's colleague Carl Nickson.

No wonder our office filled up with water so quickly... They've only found a well right under where Paul sits!

Paul said he hoped the unexpected discovery could be turned into a feature for the office during renovations, and it helped explain why the office was so badly damaged.

He said: "We're literally a stone's throw from the Foss so our vain attempt at sandbagging the doors on Boxing Day were scuppered by the fact that this was right underneath us, we were bound to be flooded anyway.

"We don't know what's happening with it next. It was discovered yesterday and we need to go to the landlord to see what they want to do about it, or whether they'll cover it up. It's a strange feature to have in a security company's office. We could put some perspex and some lights over it and make a feature out of it, but I don't know if that will be possible."
