STREET lights in York will be replaced with a new "white light" LEDs, the council has announced.
More than 900 new 25 watt LED lantern conversions will be installed from this weekend onward, mainly in residential areas.
Police have said the new, brighter, lights make people feel safer and improve the quality of CCTV images; while environment campaigners have welcomed the subtle change as a "quiet win" for energy saving.
The new lanterns can be adjusted by up to 60 per cent between midnight and 6am when the traffic is quiet. The changes will save £30 a year per light, adding up to £27,000 in total; but installing each new lantern initially costs £200.
