TEMPORARY changes are to be made to key bus stops in two city centre streets as the first step towards a number of improvements later this year.

City of York Council said the work at the stops in Rougier Street and Low Ousegate will start on Monday February 22, and the stops will reopen in the former on Monday March 7 and in Low Ousegate on Monday, March 14.

"The work on Rougier Street is funded by a £200,000 Better Bus Area grant from the Department for Transport and includes the removal of the worn and tired looking 25-year old red shelter," said a spokeswoman.

"This will coincide with the redevelopment of Roman House (the former Aviva office), as part of improvement works by the Grand Hotel, which will pave way for a brand new bus shelter on Rougier Street later this year."

The works in Low Ousegate will include resurfacing and reconstruction of the footway. The spokeswoman said the works were timed to cause the minimise disruption to passengers, as it was one of the quietest periods in the year for York’s bus network.
