COMMUNITY groups in North Yorkshire still have time to apply for grants of up to £20,000.

The Police and Crime Commissioner's Community Fund is a pool of money which can be granted to organisations, groups or individuals across North Yorkshire to help fund a new safety project or scheme to improve their area.

Since the scheme launched in May 2013, PCC Julia Mulligan has awarded almost £600,000 in grants to 65 local projects operating in North Yorkshire and the city of York.

Grants from £500 to £20,000 can be applied for through the PCC website, and should be used to help communities be and feel safer, provide extra-curricular activities for children and young people, to keep them off the streets.

Other areas the funding can be used in include reducing fear of crime and antisocial behaviour, promoting safety and supporting victims, and purchasing pieces of equipment for community groups.

Mrs Mulligan said: "I am making it as easy as possible for people to apply for this money and to be successful in their applications.

"You can call the Community Fund helpline for guidance on what’s likely to be supported, as well as practical advice on how to submit your application. Just call 101 and ask for Community Fund."

The deadline for applications is Monday, February 29, with the successful projects announced at the end of March.
