Yorkshire Shield quarter-final

Selby 12 Pontefract 13

SELBY president Ray Adamson wasn't joking when he said: "We got hammered 13-12!"

Yorkshire Division Two visitors Pontefract missed four kickable penalties via the experienced Glen Boyd, while Selby's second try only came in the last minute.

Pontefract took the lead in the 14th minute via a try by Josh Eecher, full back Ben Lunt levelling matters for Selby with a try before half-time.

Winger Ian Mallinson then gave the visitors some clear water with a try in the 44th minute and a penalty in the 58th minute before Selby hit back late on with a try by prop Greg Nagle that was converted by fly half Scott Hunt.

Adamson added: "It was a game that we were expecting to win, despite us struggling in Yorkshire Division One and Pontefract going well in Yorkshire Division Two, but they seemed more up for it than we were."

Neither of the two other scheduled quarter-finals were played on Saturday, with Malton & Norton's home match against fellow Yorkshire Division One side Bradford & Bingley being called off due to a waterlogged pitch and Bradford Salem, who should have played at West Leeds, being involved in an RFU Intermediate Cup pool match at Durham City, which the visitors lost 43-3.

Malton & Norton secretary Bill Laidler said of their first-team pitch at The Gannock: "It was perfectly playable on Friday night, but there was a lot of rain in Malton on Friday night.

"It then started against at 8am on Saturday and didn't let up, and the match was called off at 11.15am.

"We should have had three home games on Saturday and none of our pitches were playable.

"We have no idea as to when the Bradford & Bingley Shield match will be re-arranged for as we are both waiting on re-arranged league matches."

Other matches to be called off were Beverley v Morley in North One East and Bradford Salem v Scarborough in Yorkshire Division One (again due to Salem's involvement in the RFU Intermediate Cup),
