FLOOD volunteers were lauded by York City FC sponsor Benenden at a special event at Bootham Crescent.

A group of 25 people representing organisations that helped out during the devastating Christmas floods in the city were given a VIP day out at the Minstermen's 2-1 League Two victory over Stevenage on Saturday.

Benenden, which also donated £25,000 to the York Flood Appeal, welcomed representatives of York Mosque, York Rescue Boat, Fossgate Traders Association, Red Tower Group, Church of Latter Day Saints, the hugely successful Facebook group York Floods 2015: Help For The Affected, and Bishopthorpe Road Traders.

The guests enjoyed hospitality in the Keith Walwyn Suite, accompanied the players onto the pitch before the game, conducted the 50/50 draw at half-time, chose goalscorer Kenny McEvoy as man of the match and met him after the game.

Abid Salik, Imam of York Mosque, praised Benenden for helping to recognise the community relief effort, while a spokesman for the healthcare provider hailed the event "a great day".
