RESTAURANTS and diners in York have raised almost £10,000 to help young homeless people.
The charity SASH, which prevents young people from becoming homeless by offering them a room in the home of a volunteer, said it was overwhelmed by the generous response to its Eat Drink Give campaign over the Christmas period.
With the support of 11 local restaurants, diners were invited to donate £1 to SASH at the end of their meal. Restaurants taking part included both of York’s Ambiente venues, which matched every donation from customers £ for £, Café No8, Kennedy’s Bar & Restaurant, Le Cochon Aveugle, Melton’s, Oscar’s Wine Bar, Plonkers, Reina, The Star Inn The City, The Whippet Inn and Winner Winner.
SASH community fundraiser Emma Bracegirdle said: “Eat Drink Give is a new venture for us and the results have far exceeded our expectations, particularly when many of those taking part were so badly affected by the floods and were unable to trade for several days.
"The amount raised could cover the cost of our SASH Active programme for the year, which helps our young people gain essential skills and confidence for when they move into their own accommodation."
Zoe Plummer, owner of Ambiente said: “It is heartening that despite the blow dealt by the floods to so many business owners, we have still been able to help make a difference to vulnerable young people in our community."
