NEW signage is planned for the revamped Shambles Market to make sure visitors can find their way to the stalls.

Make it York have applied for planning permission to put in a number of new signs to guide visitors into Shambles market from at the key entrances.

The organisation say there will be "simple directional and informative signs" at Jubbergate, Silver Street, Newgate and at the Snickleways from the Shambles.

Chris Price, City Centre and Markets Manager, said: "Feedback from customers and traders has been that there is a need for more signage for the Shambles Market and a planning application for this has now been submitted.

"We’re keen to raise awareness of York’s daily market, not just locally but also with visitors who may not be aware of it during their stay here. We hope that improved signage at the various entry points will help with this.

"We’re calling on residents too to support their local market as our independent businesses need our support now more than ever."

The applications for nine direction signs, plus four wall-mounted direction signs on the Shambles, have already got the support of the city centre's Guildhall planning panel.
