SERIOUS questions still need to be answered over public bodies' response to the floods in York, campaigners have said.

A "shambolic" public meeting on Friday night saw some people walk out in frustration while others left without answers to their questions over flood warnings, or the help they have received since.

York woman Cary McMahon has been involved with the volunteer effort to clean-up flood damaged homes and businesses, but said she thought the meeting on Friday night was "shambolic" and achieved nothing.

York Central MP Rachael Maskell agreed that the meeting did not provide the crucial answers, and said it was vitally important that people are able to scrutinise inquiries and reports into the floods.

Council leader Chris Steward, who was at the meeting, said it was important to give people the chance to raise some of their frustrations and queries, but admitted that it could have gone "a lot better".

"It was disappointing that a very small minority of the audience kept shouting out, meaning there couldn't be any sort of normal flow.

"We knew there would be a lot of anger, but certainly it could have gone a lot better."

Plans for an independent inquiry have not changed since the troubled meeting, he added, with proposals for an independent expert panel still being drawn up.

"If people have questions the best way is still to email or write to us, or I am happy to arrange to meet."

More ward meetings will give people to get specific information for their areas, he added.
