STEPHEN Bayley, the man who co-created London's influential Design Museum with Terence Conran, will be in York later this month to launch the annual York Design Awards.

The best-selling author, cultural commentator and award-winning journalist will deliver the keynote speech at the launch of this year's awards, at Bootham School on January 26.

As a regular contributor to publications including The Telegraph, The Independent, The Times, GQ and Vanity Fair, Bayley is renowned for provocative views on ‘style’ and ‘design’.

His talk in York is unlikely to disappoint. His theme will be the importance of good design - and how disappointingly little of it there is in the human world around us.

"If you think design is intelligence made visible, it's dismaying how stupid things seem,” he said.

The York Design Awards are all about trying to ensure that 'intelligence made visible' is the hallmark of new and restored buildings and public spaces in York - and that what we build today matches the quality of what has gone before.

“It is a privilege to have Stephen Bayley lined up to speak at our 2016 awards launch evening," said Janet Hopton, chair of the York Design Awards. "As a British design and cultural commentator of such eminence, we are really looking forward to hearing his thoughts on what constitutes ‘good design’ in the context of architecture and a city like York.”

Founded in 2006, the York Design Awards are now entering their tenth year. Developers, architects, building owners and homeowners are being encouraged to submit their projects for consideration in one or more of eight categories. Winners last year included phase 1 of the York Racecourse improvements, and the York Archives hub at the central library.

Details of how to enter this year's awards, which are open to builders, architects, developers and building owners, will be available soon at www.yorkdesignawards.org. Winners will be announced and presented with their awards at the presentation evening which takes place on Wednesday, June 22 at the Ron Cooke Hub.
