TWO people have been taken to hospital after coaches carrying about 50 passengers crashed near York.

The crash happened on the A19 at Bagby, three miles south of Thirsk at about 10am today, and involved two touring coaches, both travelling from Durham towards York.

North Yorkshire Police originally said the coaches were carrying about 80 passengers, but later confirmed there were about 50 people on board.

One passenger has received minor injuries to the hand, and has been taken to York Hospital for treatment.

A second passenger received more serious abdominal injuries and is being treated at James Cook Hospital.

Additional coaches were dispatched and have transported those uninjured away from the scene.

The A19 was closed between Sessay and Tollerton motorists were asked to avoid the area, but North Yorkshire Police confirmed it reopened at about 2pm.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the crash happened at Bridge Farm at Thirkleby and involved two single decker coaches.
