YORK Hospital bosses seemingly cannot understand (The Press, November 25) why they received a “must do better” report from the Care Quality Commission.

Perhaps my experience will help them understand. I had to accompany an ill family member to Accident & Emergency.

The target time for transit through A&E is four hours. We were still there ten hours later. The reason on that occasion was lack of available ward beds.

Eleven patients were queued ahead, all waiting for beds and requiring monitoring by the hard working A&E team, who were struggling to cope with an endless stream of incoming patients.

When I finally left around 9pm, every cubicle was full and seven ambulances were stacked outside, their crews waiting inside with patients who could not yet be assessed by the A&E team.

I hope that I find my relative in a better situation and preferably in a ward, when I go back.
