AN AMBITIOUS project to restore an historic tower has received a £10,000 cash boost.

Plans to turn York's 15th Century Red Tower into a community kitchen, cafe and a space for activities were given a push in the right direction with the awarding of a Government grant.

The project, led by grassroots network The Incredible Movement (TIM) in York in partnership with City of York Council, is aiming to acquire the building on Foss Islands Road on a long lease from the council and transform the unused site.

Imelda Havers, chairman of TIM in York, said: "This is great news for the Red Tower. We knew we had a unique opportunity to reinvent a piece of history in an innovative way to benefit local people.

"We are particularly pleased that our views have been endorsed through winning funding through this very competitive programme."

Activities have already been taking place throughout the year, including a successful opening at York Residents First weekend, a Heritage open day and a regular pay-as-you-feel café on Saturdays throughout the summer.

Work on this stage of the project will commence immediately, and by next spring, the group will know if it is feasible to bring the building back into use, and how that could happen.

The group hopes further funds will be raised to fully bring the building back into use.

John Cossham, a supporter of the project since its inception, said: "I love the idea of local people being able to use and manage this space, hopefully with a cafe or kitchen, and plenty of opportunities to get involved, learn skills and have fun."

Andrew Laslett, strategic services manager, at York council, said: “This success is great news for the Red Tower in York and it was a pleasure to work in close partnership with The Incredible Movement in York (TIM) to help secure the grant.

"We’re delighted that they now have the funds to progress further research and plans for the tower, ensuring that it will play an important role in the local community for generations to come."
