THOUSANDS of properties in western and north York were hit by power cuts on Wednesday.
The problems began in west York and shortly after power was restored there, the lights went off in Rawcliffe, Skelton, Newton-on-Ouse and other villages north of York.
Northern Power said 1,971 customers in the YO26 area - which includes parts of Acomb and Poppleton - were initially affected at about 2.40pm by a fault in the high voltage network.
A spokeswoman said 350 customers had their electricity restored by 2.54 pm and work was continuing in a bid to restore supplies to remaining customers. The estimated time for power to be fully restored was 4.15pm.
She said the cause of the cut, which affected properties in the Ebor Business Park, was not yet known.
At 7.36pm, the second power cut affected hundreds of properties in north York and the area along the A19 towards Thirsk.
Northern Power was hoping to have power restored to all those affected by 9.15pm
