CHERRY Red Records are to celebrate the days of "Shoegaze" bands in a five-disc compilation, Still In A Dream, A Story Of Shoegaze: 1988-95, early next year.

The evolution of the sound is charted from the bands who inspired it on the first disc to many of the American and other acts beyond Britain on disc five.

"Shoegaze” was a term invented circa 1990 to describe a new breed of British Indie guitar bands who looked down at their feet through a curtain of floppy hair as they played, inspired by the likes of 4AD Records, My Bloody Valentine and the American act Sonic Youth.

Bands such as Ride, Moose, Lush, Pale Saints and The Telescopes duly married dreamy, off-kilter melodies, skewed, heavily effects-laden guitar riffs and psychedelic production values.

Although "Shoegaze" was initially a derogatory reaction, coined to look down on its proponents, the music has nevertheless influenced successive generations of bands, especially those outside of Britain.

Housed in a lavish "book" set, Still In A Dream pays tribute to that period with numerous classics, cult favourites, rarities and tracks new to CD, accompanied by rare memorabilia, 12,000 words of sleeve-notes by journalist Neil Taylor and band biographies, in recollection of "The Scene That Celebrated Itself".

Among the myriad acts featured are The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Cocteau Twins, The House Of Love, Ultra Vivid Scene, Spacemen 3, Galaxie 500, Kitchens Of Distinction; Chapterhouse, Slowdive, Catherine Wheel, The Dylans, Spiritualized, Flying Saucer Attack, Mercury Rev and Luna.

Still In A Dream will be released on January 29 2016.
