A MAN has been killed on railway lines in York today.

The man was struck by a train north of York, close to New Earswick, this afternoon and died at the scene.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: "Our officers were called to the line close to Kettle String Farm crossing on Monday, 23 November following reports of a person being hit by a train.

"North Yorkshire Police officers also attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 1.38pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious. Medics from North Yorkshire Ambulance Service pronounced a man dead at the scene."

The B1363 Wigginton Road has been closed close to Crichton Avenue as a result of the incident, and trains cannot run between York and Scarborough.

Bus replacements are being run instead. Commuters are advised to expect delays of at least 30 minutes, and there have been reports of heavy traffic in both directions on Wigginton Road following the restrictions, which were alleviated by about 6.50pm.

The spokeswoman said officers are currently working to identify the man and speak to his family, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
