FOUR more community groups in York will be able to bid for vital money, when the city hosts its third York Soup fundraiser.

The next of the crowd-funding meals will be held on December 2 at the Spurriergate Centre, in Spurriergate.

Doors will open at 6pm, with pitches at 6.30pm and soup at 7pm. The winner will be announced at 8pm.

The events are based on the successful Detroit Soup fundraisers, where dining donors have given projects more than $85,000 in small grants in five years.

In York, people pay £10 plus a £1.50 booking fee for a ticket, which entitles them to a meal and a vote. Ticket-holders then listen to pitches for four projects, then vote for who should receive all the money from ticket sales.

The only criteria for pitches is that they must benefit York.

It is hoped that as well as being a source of funding for one project each time, the evenings will also benefit all projects in other ways, potentially by putting them in touch with people who can give time or expertise.

Successful events have already been held at the Priory Street Centre and Guildhall. At the first event in June, the youth mentoring charity The Island received £930, then at the second in September, City of York Athletics Club received about £700, which it is using to expand its disability section.

The people behind the winning pitch will be expected to attend a subsequent event, to tell people how the money has been used and to update guests on the progress of their project.
