YORK's Tory council leader is part of a group campaigning for local power over Sunday trading laws.

Chris Steward has added his name to a list of Conservative local politicians writing to the Planning Minister Brandon Lewis, asking that changes to Sunday trading laws be left to local communities.

Cllr Steward said: "Relaxing these laws could have a positive effect on trade throughout the city centre, on the other hand there are people who have strong feelings on this matter, and so without taking any position on what is best for York at this point, York Conservatives firmly support the position that whether or not to extend Sunday trading is exactly the sort of decision which should be made at the local level following appropriate consultation.

"We also think local areas should be granted maximum flexibility on this issue, for example to be able to consider promoting a certain area for extended trading by means of local zoning, if it is decided that this would promote local businesses."
