A YORK school is aiming to spruce up its outdoor spaces, and the children are fundraising to pay for it.

Pupils at St Aelred's RC Primary School in Tang Hall raised over £550 running a fun run, with money apparently still coming in.

The challenge was to see how many times the children could run round the school field in half an hour.

The children were enthusiastic about the run. Chloe from year three said: "I enjoyed the Fun Run because we were all together. I got to run with my sister Connie and our friends."

Declan from year five said: "I think the fun run was a great opportunity to raise money for our school equipment."

Charlotte Black, teacher at the school, added: "It was a beautiful autumnal day for parents, staff and friends of the school."

The improvements to the outside of St Aelred's, a school of 205 pupils, were started during the summer holidays with children, parents and staff creating a new school allotment and renovating the nature area and pond.

Activities are planned during half-term to start work on a small orchard and wildflower area, and will continue into the spring with a new outdoor classroom and quiet garden.
