THE CHAIRMAN of Tadcaster Albion FC has called for hooligans who attacked his fans to be banned from matches.

Five fans were hurt when they were confronted by Worksop Town supporters at the end of their Northern Counties East Football League Premier Division game on Wednesday.

Players and management from the Nottinghamshire side were forced to wade into the melee to try to end the fighting as 300 home supporters mixed with around 100 fans from Tadcaster when they left the Sandy Lane ground.

Albion chairman Matthew Gore says the club will be pressing charges and criticised police for not turning up until the fight had stopped.

He claimed Worksop Town knew there was going to be a crowd of almost 900 in attendance and should have organised more security.

He said: "It's a shame it happened like that because it could have been avoided. There could've been a stronger presence from the police.

"The majority of fans had left the ground but there must have been two or three hundred Worksop fans still hanging around. The stewards tried to segregate it but they pushed them into the Tadcaster fans.

"We want these lads banned.

"There must have been 50 to 100 lads looking for trouble and they just started wading in and hitting our fans. It was scary."

Mr Gore said he feared there would be trouble in Worksop after an ugly incident took place in the stands last season and fans appeared aggressive before kick off.

"Right from the outset lads were barging there way into the crowd and were really drunk, so there was the potential for this to happen and it all went off at the end," added Mr Gore.

"We have been there twice and both times it has ended up with bother. It's not good enough."

Kevin Keep, chairman of Worksop Town FC, added: "They didn't deserve that tirade.

"During the game there was nothing except banter it was just at the end when there was a handful of yobs who wanted to come for trouble.

"At this level alcohol is allowed and you are allowed to go in and out to the bar.

"That shouldn't be allowed because you are brave when you've had a drink and at the next AGM I will bring up that alcohol should be banned."

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "On arrival no disorder was witnessed by officers and no injured parties presented themselves to officers to make a complaint.

"No arrests were made."
