DISCOUNT supermarket Aldi is eyeing a third site in York, it has emerged.

The German chain already has two sites in the city - one on Fulford Road and one at Monks Cross - but has now revealed it wants to open a third store on the former grain silos site on Water Lane, Clifton.

The site already has planning permission for 215 new homes which are being built by Redrow Homes, but Aldi have announced a public exhibition to give more details of their proposed development.

The event will take place at St Joseph's Church Hall on Sutton Way next Tuesday, October 27 from 3pm to 7pm.

Initial plans are for what the company describes as a "modestly sized" Aldi foodstore with around 1,254sq m of sales space.

If it goes ahead, the multi-million pound new store would be built close to the Water Lane junction with Green Lane, and would provide 103 car parking spaces including eight accessible and five parent and child spaces.

In literature sent out to homes nearby, Aldi say their new custom-built store would serve local residents and provide more choice for shoppers in the area.

The Water Lane site is one of York's largest brownfield sites but has been mired in difficulty and planning wrangles since the grain stores closed more than a decade ago.

In 2013 a planning inspector gave developers permission to build the 200 homes without any provision for affordable housing, after a legal battle between Wilton Developments and City of York Council.

But it was not until earlier this year that Wakefield-based Redrow Homes got the final piece of planning permission needed and started work to build the complex of three and four-bedroomed homes along with six local bus stops.
