CHARITY fundraiser Phil Wiggins may have completed his target mileage this year, but says he won't stop until he's raised £10,000.

Phil, who last year ran, swam and cycled 4,000 miles for the Alzheimer's Society, pledged to undertake 1,500 miles of events this year to raise money for Martin House Hospice.

He finished his challenge as he crossed the finish line of the Plusnet 10 mile run on Sunday, and has so far raised about £3,500 for the hospice, but said he isn't done yet.

Phil said: "This year's challenge has been just as tough as last year, if not harder, but with more rest in between.

"Last year I was learning as I went along and got a little bit better with each event. This year I've done fewer events but expectations for times have been higher so I was trying to really get up there and found it just as demanding. With something like the Newcastle to London bike ride, I wasn't just trying to survive a 24-hour race, I was trying to get up there in the top riders."

Phil said he had not done as much running this year, "just a bit of training and half marathons, but not much in between", but he enjoyed this weekend's race so much, he would be signing up for next year's event.

He said the difference in sponsorship this year was due to not pestering friends and family for money, but businesses for sponsorship, and he hoped that by extending his fundraising challenge, he would still be able to raise £10,000 for the hospice.

Phil said: "I really want to raise money for Martin House. I'll come up with some new, fresh challenges to get peoples' attention and interest and will keep on going until I do what I said I was going to do.

"I really just started because it's a fantastic place and wanted to help out but since then one of our friends, who has a very sick son, has started using Martin House. There were there this weekend getting respite and it hits home. She messaged me after I'd finished the run and said 'it's an amazing place you're raising money for, full of families and hope', so it just makes you think - yes, this is why I'm doing it. It's not about daft challenges it's about raising money for this great place."

Phil will be hosting a quiz night at the Pitcher and Piano in York on November 12 to contribute to his fundraising. Tickets cost £20 for a team of four, and places can be booked by emailing philwiggins10@gmail.com Alternatively, go to justgiving.com/thewiggo2015fundraiser
