YORK'S tourist attractions are lining up to take part in the Illuminating York Festival Fringe later this month.

The York Dungeon is organising special walking tours of York, aimed at six to ten-year-olds and their families, while the National Railway Museum will be showing Locos in a Different Light and the York Army Museum will invite visitors to view the First World War through the magic lantern.

Fairfax House, the Merchant Adventurers Hall and the Bar Convent Living Heritage Centre will also all offer an opportunity to see their surroundings in a very different light, while York Art Gallery will also be open for a mystery tour by night.

Dungeon general manager Helen Douglas said she was delighted it was taking part in the Fringe, adding: "If your child is a lover of ghosts, bats, witches, and all things Halloween, and under the age of ten-years-old, then this family tour is definitely for you.”

Kate McMullen, of York's new new destination management organisation, Make it York, said: "We’re delighted so many of York’s visitor attractions are taking part in the Festival Fringe and we’re confident the York Dungeon tour will be a popular addition to this year’s packed programme."

The Fringe will be joining the core artistic pieces of the Illuminating York Festival, which runs from October 28 to 31, is celebrating its tenth anniversary and coincides with UNESCO's 'international year of light and light technology.'

The festival includes plans to suspend up to 40 mirrorballs in a long line above head height down the centre of Shambles and, as people walk along at night, bouncing images reflecting the street's history as the 'street of butchers' - such as sausages and pork chops - off them.

A walking route has also been created around the city centre that will lead people from one light show to another.

The trail will begin and end at Museum Gardens - the only part of this year's festival people will have to pay to see - which will be transformed into a night-time garden celebrating their botanical history.

Three city centre churches - St Helen's, All Saints Pavement and St Michael-le-Belfrey - will form a single work of art, each with its own version of light shows involving candles.
