FIREFIGHTERS are to stage another spectacular fireworks and bonfire display next month as part of York's Guy Fawkes Day celebrations.

The event, which takes place from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Saturday, November 7, at Rawcliffe Country Park, is being supported by City of York Council and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

It is intended to raise money for the Fire Fighters Charity but organisers also hope it will reduce the number of bonfire night accidents and injuries in York.

As well as the bonfire and fireworks display, there will be a hog roast, drinks, a display of fire service equipment, stalls and music, and marching from the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Pipe Band.

The organisers say they decided to hold another display this year following last November's successful event.

Cllr Nigel Ayre, executive member for leisure at the council, said: “The Fire Fighters Charity firework display and bonfire was a hugely enjoyable event last year with over 2,000 people from across the area attending, and we would encourage people to come along and celebrate bonfire night in safety.”

First York is supporting the evening by running its Rawcliffe Bar Park&Ride buses for an additional 30 minutes until 9pm, to make it possible for people to leave their cars at home and come by bus.

Spectators are being encouraged to travel on public transport, although the car park will also remain open longer than usual, until 9pm, to accommodate the end of the event.

Entry will cost £7 for adults and £3 for children aged three and over, with under-3s admitted free of charge. Young people aged 17 or younger must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets can be bought from all Park&Ride offices, for which the council has waived a charge, and from York, Acomb and Huntingdon fire stations during weekday office hours, and also from The Press reception desk in Walmgate during office hours, but for cash only.
