A NEW brewery could bring beer lovers to Walmgate if plans get the go-ahead from city councillors.

Developers want to transform an empty industrial building just off Walmgate into a microbrewery with its own visitor centre, gift shop and tap room.

A planning application has gone in to the city council for Brew York - the new company - which says the directors want to create "hand crafted, high quality ales" for pubs, bars and restaurants mainly inside York city walls.

Deliveries could even be made with a "dray bike" which would use pedal power to deliver up to six "firkins" of beer at a time to city centre pubs.

The application is for unit six of the Enterprise Complex, off Walmgate, which has lain empty since York Archaeological Trust stopped using it for storage at the end of 2013.

The brewery would be in the Enterprise Complex in Walmgate

A planning document says it offers an "ideal" home for the new brewery with enough space for the visitor centre and shop, while the city centre location would help attract tourists.

The Tap Room would initially open Thursday to Saturday only, but the planning application says directors would hope to bring in a mid-week opening once business grows.

A separate licensing application will be made for the Tap Room. The whole project would initially create jobs for the two company directors and one more employee, with hopes they would be able to hire three more people as the business establishes.
