ANGLERS and nature lovers are being asked to help out with a new scheme to look after a popular pond in York.

A Volunteer Bailiff Scheme is launching at Chapman's Pond, in Dringhouses, which had to close over the summer after a number of fish deaths.

The Environment Agency checked the pond in June, after a surge in the number of carp deaths sparked fears of an infection. It was given the all clear for bacterial or viral infections and reopened two months later, but now local anglers have come up with the bailiff scheme as a way of encouraging good fishing practice and maintaining the area as a beautiful place for visitors.

The council executive member with responsibility for leisure, Nigel Ayre, said: "Chapman’s Pond is a beautiful area and a popular fishing spot. The volunteers will be a friendly and well-informed presence at the site, helping to ensure that a visit continues to be a pleasurable experience for all.

He added: "We would ask that anglers and visitors show respect to the volunteers and follow their advice – they are there for everyone’s benefit and to ensure the pond is looked after for future enjoyment.”

The volunteers will help to monitor the water quality, talk to visitors about site rules and report any anti-social behaviour. They will also help people with fishing tips and techniques.

On top of this, the volunteers will help protect the fish by advising how to land one without injuring it and talking to people on their use of bait. They will also monitor the health of the fish caught for early signs of any problems with the pond environment.

Anyone who wants to fish at the pond should have a valid rod licence which can be bought from post offices.

The Environment Agency, city council, and police will also be supporting the Volunteer Bailiff Scheme, which launches on Monday, October 12.
