WHIMSICAL Welshman Euros Childs, frontman of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci from 1991 to their demise in 2004, returns to The Basement at City Screen, York, this weekend at the invitation of Please Please You promoter Joe Coates.

"We're super-pleased to welcome Euros and his killer band back to York on Saturday," says Joe. "They were one of the real highlights of Indietracks Festival this year – really great entertainment – and they're playing here a week after Euros released his new album, Sweetheart."

Childs, who hails from Pembrokeshire in South Wales, released his debut solo album, Chops, on the Wichita label in 2006, followed by three in quick succession for this independent label: both Bore Da and The Miracle Inn in 2007 and Cheer Gone in 2008.

Euros set up his own label, National Elf, in 2009 and to date has issued six further albums, among them Ends in 2011, Summer Special in 2012 and Situation Comedy in 2013, as well as the singles Spin That Girl Around, Tete à Tete and That's Better. New album Sweetheart, issued on October 2, was preceded by the single Fruit And Veg.

When asked by taxi drivers, hairdressers or distant relatives what kind of music he plays, Childs replies: 'It's pop music with a bit of folk music thrown in. Sometimes synthesisers are used, sometimes pianos or guitars, but it's always rock'n'roll''.

Tickets cost £10 in advance at seetickets.com/event/euros-childs/ or in person from The Basement, The Inkwell in Gillygate and Jumbo Records in Leeds or £12 on the door from 8pm.
