BEER giant BrewDog has taken the first step towards opening a new bar in York city-centre.

The company has submitted a licensing application to City of York Council for the empty ground floor of 130-134 Micklegate.

As reported in The Press in July, the Scottish-based brewery and pub chain hopes to turn it into a large bar.

Its application is to sell alcohol until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights and midnight every other night, with the bar closing half an hour after last orders.

Announcing the plans inJuly, BrewDog said on their website: "It’s a fantastic size and we are thrilled to finally get a bar site sorted for this true city of beer. Stay tuned for more!"

BrewDog's plans are likely to face objections from North Yorkshire Police, who have said they believe there should be no more licensed premises in the city-centre.
