PUB-GOERS will have the chance to take on the world champion at a classic English bar game this weekend.
The Golden Ball in Cromwell Road is welcoming Dave Ingram and also England captain Curt Driver, for a charity fun day on Saturday (September 26).
People will be invited to pay £2 to take on either of the stars, with a £50 prize for the highest-scoring challenger.
Proceeds will go to St Leonard's Hospice, the chosen charity of the Golden Ball's own bar billiards captain, Michael Shawcross, whose friend Oliver Grant was cared for by the hospice before his death from cancer in 2006, aged 26.
World champion David Ingram
Michael said: "Oliver was a gifted history scholar who spent many happy nights in the Golden Ball playing bar billiards prior to his illness. Consequently, the Golden Ball feels like the perfect venue in which to celebrate the rejuvenation of this great game in York, while making as much money as possible for a charity that relies heavily on public donations to fund its invaluable work."
Bar billiards has enjoyed a resurgence in York in recent years. For several years, The Golden Ball had the city's only table, but a league is now running and there are teams and tables at several other pubs.
Mr Ingram and Mr Driver will be accepting challenges from 2pm to 10pm. A separate practice table will also be available for beginners, with tips from the experts, and there will be food in the beer garden all afternoon.
