WATER music proved a winner with shoppers and tourists as the weather failed to dampen the York Festival of Traditional Dance.

Morris men and women from several counties in north England danced in the rain at four places around the city centre.

The two-day festival began yesterday with a procession from St Helen's Square to Kings Square where hosts Ebor Morris Men began the dancing.

Among the morris sides were Persephone Women's Morris from West Yorkshire who said as long as their instruments remained dry they would dance come rain or sunshine.

They praised the crowds who gathered around their performance in St Sampson's Square.

The dancing began at about 10.30am and continued until 5pm on Saturday and from 11am to 2pm today at the four stations, which included Upper Parliament Street and College Green.

The annual festival gives morris dancers the chance to show the unique English dancing style together with its traditional characters.
