MORE than 120,000 passengers have travelled to and from Whitby using the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in the last year, a rise of 10 per cent on the previous year.

The increase has been credited to an additional platform and improved track works along the line, making the NYMR more accessible to fans of the heritage steam train.

Philip Benham, NYMR managing director, said: "The figures paint an upbeat picture of the growing popularity in taking a step back in time by using our services for a day out at the seaside or on the moors.

"To think that the line was closed 50 years ago, it is testimony to all who have been involved in its resurgence that we are now celebrating such a positive milestone."

It is estimated the NYMR helps to bring £30 million per year into the local economy.
