VETERAN rockers Metallica brought the curtain down on Leeds Festival with their headline set on the main stage.

At the arena where The Libertines and Mumford and Sons had gone before them over the festival's previous two days, the Enter Sandman band played their collection of hits dating back to the early 80s.

The band formed in 1981 after guitarist James Hetfield responded to an advert posted by drummer Lars Ulrich in a newspaper.

Ten studio albums, nine Grammy awards and 110 million album sales later, the band rounded off the third day of shows with a firework-friendly performance.

Crowd favourites Royal Blood also featured on the third and final day, along with Bring Me The Horizon and Foals.

Royal Blood's self-titled debut album earned them a Brit award after the unique two-piece from Brighton exploded onto the music scene with their huge sound made only by the crashing of a drum kit and a bass guitar.

Visitors to the NME stage were rewarded with thumping sets from indie heroes Catfish and the Bottlemen and Glaswegian outfit Twin Atlantic.

The quartet's lively show saw them perform their biggest recent hits, Free and Make a Beast of Myself, while Lethal Bizzle - most famous for coining the word 'dench', took over the BBC1xtra tent as the sun set on another year of Leeds Festival.
