WE have Lawrie and Bessie Inman, from Poppleton, to thank for the selection of old photographs and postcards in Yesterday Once More today.

The images were in an old album passed on by the Inmans to Poppleton councillor (and recent Lord Mayor) Ian Gillies. Cllr Gillies then passed them on to us.

Most are old photographs (or postcards) of either Upper or Nether Poppleton. So there's a wonderful street scene of upper Poppleton, in which the village looks far more rural than it does today. There is no date: but the cattle grazing on the grass beside the street suggest this may have been common land at the time the photo was taken. Perhaps someone can put us right?

Other photographs show the Poppleton Rovers football team of 1924-25; and the Fox Inn in Nether Poppleton. Presumably the man standing in front of the doorway is the proprietor, Mr P Eastwood. Does anyone know what that P might have stood for - and when this photo might have been taken?

One lovely, tranquil photograph is entitled simply 'War Memorial, Nether Poppleton'; and then there is a mysterious picture of a large, detached house captioned 'A bit of New Poppleton'. Does anyone recognise the building in question? And just how new is new?

In addition to the photographs which are clearly labelled as being Poppleton, there are two others without any identifying captions at all. One shows a long, rather grand building with a low stone wall in front, and a collection of people in what looks like Edwardian dress (including a boy on a horse) in front. The other is clearly a farming scene. We assume that both of these photographs are connected to Poppleton in some way - but can any readers identify them?

And finally, a photograph that is rather different, in that it shows not Poppleton but Acomb. It is actually a photograph of the coronation celebrations in Acomb on June 22, 1911. The coronation in question, of course, was that of King George V, grandfather of the present Queen.
