TWO dedicated volunteers at a historic railway near York are restoring a vintage carriage.

Rob Cropp and Mike Suggden, both members of the Derwent Valley Light Railway at Murton Park, have spent several months restoring a Victorian railway coach.

Rob said the coach was built at the old Holgate carriage and wagon works in York in about 1890. It will be on show to the public later this month.

A diesel gala night will be held for the public at Derwent Valley Light Railway at Murton Park from 5.30pm on Friday, September 18.

Locomotives will also be on display, including a class 04 D2245, a class 03 03079, a Ruston 88DS related to the Rowntree company, and an ex-British Sugar 165DS, also from York. Visitors will also see a demonstration run of a recently restored Wickham trolley.

Entry costs £6 and money raised at the event will go towards funding an engine shed so restoration can be carried out under cover. Hot food will be available.
