A MAN has been arrested after a serious sexual assault in York.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the incident in Clarence Street, close to York St John University's Fountains Learning Centre, at about 2.30am.

A police spokeswoman said a 23-year-old man from York was arrested following an allegation of a serious sexual assault against a woman in her thirties.

He has since been released on bail.

Officers have been at the scene throughout this morning, and a small area of the street remained cordoned off until about 11.45am, when a police van arrived to remove some evidence from the scene.

The spokeswoman said: "Extensive police enquiries are ongoing and the man remains in police custody for questioning."
