SCAMMERS are targetting homes in York claiming to be on an official rehabilitation scheme.

Door to door salesman have been reported cold calling at homes around York selling things like dishcloths and cleaning products, and claiming that this is part of a rehabilitation scheme run by local probation, youth offending or prison services.

But the council has confirmed this is not the case, and any ID cards used will be fakes.

Cllr David Carr said: “Our youth offending services would never endorse such a scheme and we ask that residents do not support the scam by buying from these people. Instead, please alert neighbours to this - particularly any vulnerable neighbours.”

Falsely claiming to work for the council is an offence, to report it ring Trading Standards via the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 0345 4040506. North Yorkshire Police also recommend that people concerned about unwanted visitors should call 101, or dial 999 in an emergency.
