WHEN there are so many very important issues facing people across York for councillors to focus on, from building more social and affordable housing to setting a vision for high-skilled jobs in the economy, I was intrigued as to why Liberal Democrat councillors chose to spend their time making a plea to me to enable voting at 16 and 17 (The Press, August 26).
The councillors only needed to see my voting record to note that I have already voted to reduce the age of majority to 16, and have actively campaigned – as is Labour Party policy – for political education and votes at 16.
For clarity, I will be supporting Labour MP Vicky Foxcroft’s Private Members Bill on September 11 in Parliament to enable 16-year-olds to vote in all future elections.
Rachael Maskell, Labour and Co-operative MP for York Central, Holgate Road, York
