VOCATIONAL results for students at York College continue to go from strength to strength for those looking for an alternative to A-levels.

About 329 students, 57 per cent, attained a Triple Distinction grade in their Level 3 BTEC extended diploma qualification, of which 168 or 29 per cent were D*D*D*, equivalent to 3 A*s at A-level, up from 50 per cent the previous year.

Jack Mead, formerly of Easingwold School, achieved D*D*D* on the construction and the built environment extended diploma Level 3 and has secured a place at Loughborough University to study commercial management and quantity surveying.

Jack said: “This course gave me an insight into all aspects of the industry - it was a perfect fit, from day one I loved it. York College has been good for me. The more mature environment allowed me to build my confidence and independence. My college tutors were very supportive and I felt comfortable applying to Loughborough University which is rated very highly by industry professionals. I feel very excited for the future.”

Natasha Murray, formerly of Woldgate College, achieved D*D*D* studying the 3D design crafts extended diploma Level 3, and is now progressing to University of Huddersfield to study Interior Design.

She said: “The course was even better than I expected because of the great facilities and the opportunities I had to create interesting work. I loved studying 3D design crafts as we did lots of exciting projects and great workshops, York College is a fantastic place to explore new ideas and I found that the college allows students to be individuals. I really liked my tutors, they were friendly and extremely helpful. They offered a lot of advice and support when needed it. I think York College has prepared me for university.”

Mark Doyle, assistant principal for vocational studies said: "These results once again demonstrate that vocational courses provide a real and valuable alternative to A-level study for young people, many of whom will progress to university or directly into employment.
