A MAJOR junction of the A64 will be closed for four nights starting tonight.

Work to resurface the Fulford Interchange, where the A64 meets the A19, will begin today, September 1, and run until Friday, September 4, with full road closures between 8pm and 6am.

Diversions will be in place each night, with temporary traffic lights also in place on the A19, where the road will be reduced to the single lane.

The roadworks are part of the £2million Department for Transport funding, which City of York Council successfully bid for and secured from a share of a £170 million Government Pinch Point Fund in 2013, and part of a wider £4.7m project in the area, which aims to supporting local transport schemes that tackle congestion and support growth.

The works began in May, in an effort to tackle long term congestion on the A19 near Fulford and improve journey times and reliability of public transport on the road, which City of York Council said is used by more than 20,000 vehicles every day.

Contractors are in the process of creating a new inbound bus lane between the two roundabouts at Fulford, linking into the existing bus lanes into and out of York, and are adding an extra lane of traffic on the approach to and through the Designer Outlet roundabout to save drivers time.

Traffic heading east and west on the A64 will not be affected by the overnight closures, and diversions will be in place for drivers getting onto the A64 from the A19.

Drivers heading from Selby towards the A64 will be diverted on the inner ring road and the A1079 Hull Road, while motorists on the A64 wishing to run onto the A19 will be diverted via Tadcaster Road or the A1079 Hull Road.

Park & Ride services to and from the Designer Outlet will not be affected, as the road closures will be outside the usual opening times, but staff leaving the outlet after 8pm will need to exit using Naburn Lane as St. Nicholas Avenue will be closed after this time.

Late bus services on the 415, which ordinarily leaves the outlet at 9.15pm to York and 9.50pm to Selby, will also be affected, and passengers will need to walk to the stops on the A19 Selby Road or the A19 near Lingcroft Lane.
