CELEBRATING both the man and his legendary London jazz club, The Ronnie Scott’s All Star Quintet combine marvellous music and amusing anecdotes from the venue’s 65-year history.

Led by Ronnie Scott’s Club musical director and pianist, James Pearson, the All Star Quintet has played in support of some of the finest bands and orchestras in the world, as well as with Jeff Beck, Carleen Anderson and Jon Hendricks, to name just a few.

Every seat in the White Rose Rotunda was sold, with ushers leading audience members to empty chairs in a bid to get everyone seated. The atmosphere was positively electric and it grew even better once the band began to play. The music was spot on, meandering between frenetic, brassy bebop and slower, more refined cool jazz, intertwined with the intriguing story of Ronnie Scott’s and the man behind it.

It’s a true testament to the musicians that, despite playing instrumentals only, the show was an absolute blast to sit through. Pieces from jazz legends Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Ben Webster and Joe Zawinul were all re-created with all the enthusiasm and energy that the band could muster, making for a great night of entertainment.

The Ronnie Scott’s All Star Quintet presented a fantastic night of music and mirth-making. While the show may have benefited from a slightly larger venue, the overall experience was fantastic.
