A TEENAGER accused of murder is responsible for the death of Liam Miller, a court heard.

Samuel Frederick Donley, 19, appeared before Leeds Crown Court today, charged with the murder of 20-year-old Liam Paul Miller in Acomb on Monday, July 27.

Donley appeared in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt and tracksuit bottoms.

He did not enter a plea and spoke only to confirm his name, but prosecutor Jonathan Sharp said Donley had indicated in police interview that there was no dispute he was responsible for the death, and defence barrister Tony Kelbrick told the court his client did not dispute this.

Donley was found suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound in Hamilton Drive West at about 10.40pm on Monday, July 27, close to where Mr Miller had suffered multiple stab wounds. Mr Miller died that night, and Donley spent more than 24 hours in hospital before being taken into custody and later charged with murder.

He is also charged with the attempted murder of Theophilos Theophilou, a man in his fifties who was attacked when he stopped to try and help Mr Miller while passing by. He ran from the scene and took refuge in a nearby garden, where residents helped him until emergency services arrived.

Recorder of Leeds Judge Collier said he needed to consult with the high court judge who would preside over the case to fix a date for the trial, which is expected to take four or five days.

The court heard medical reports would be ordered ahead of a trial, and a preliminary hearing was set for Leeds Crown Court on August 19, when Donley will again appear. A plea and case management hearing was also set for October 2, and Donley was remanded in custody.
