A POPULAR pond in York has reopened to anglers following a two-month investigation into mysterious fish deaths.

The deaths were likely caused by stress due to the high fish population in the pond and underlying water quality issues.

Chapman’s Pond in Dringhouses was closed to anglers in early June, following a surge in the number of carp deaths that sparked fears of an infection.

The Friends of Chapman's Pond called in the Environment Agency, but it has now been given the all-clear following tests.

An agency spokesperson said: "The pond was given the thumbs up following a full health analysis carried out by the Environment Agency’s national fish health team based in Brampton.

"Tests ruled out viral or bacterial infections that were a potential cause for concern and the reason for the fishing ban being imposed. Further investigations have highlighted the likely causes of the fish deaths to be stress due to a high fish population in the pond and underlying water quality issues."

City of York Council is holding an open meeting at the pond at 6.30pm on Wednesday for anyone with an interest in the issue, or who wants to raise questions or concerns or discuss ongoing fisheries management of the site.

Laura Hogg, fisheries and biodiversity officer at the Environment Agency said: “We are delighted that the pond is reopening and welcome the opportunity to continue to work closely with City of York Council and The Friends of Chapman’s Pond to ensure a healthy and sustainable fishery.

“I’d like to encourage all users of the pond and surrounding nature reserve to remain vigilant and look out for further advice and best practice guidance in the coming weeks.”

Anglers are asked to ensure they always check their equipment, clean mud from boots and equipment when they leave a watercourse, and dry all kit for 48 hours before reusing it, to minimise the risk of any infections spreading.
