TWO casualties were airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a head-on crash in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said firefighters were called to the accident on the A169 south of Pickering at 3.15pm yesterday.

A spokesman said crews cut free the trapped driver of a Vauxhall Corsa, who was suffering from a broken femur and serious internal injuries.

He said a female passenger, who had already been freed from the wreckage, was suffering from two broken arms, a broken pelvis and internal injuries.

They were both taken to James Cook Hospital by the Great North Air Ambulance. He added that the female driver of the other vehicle suffered from shock, and was comforted by staff at a nearby pub.
