THE picture of Bob Gwynne, curator of collections and research at the National Railway Museum, checking on work to restore the Flying Scotsman (The Press, July 20) brought back many very happy memories for me.
As a five-year-old in 1940, I can remember sitting on the lap of a very pretty WAAF girl in a carriage of the Flying Scotsman travelling from London to Edinburgh, being fed chocolate and other treats when my family were evacuated from London to Edinburgh to avoid the Blitz.
With the lack of food and ration books it was a real treat, and it didn’t end there as we stayed with my uncle Danny in Edinburgh, who worked in a bakery.
Yes, in spite of the dangers in the Second World War, the Flying Scotsman holds many dear memories.
